S Somanath appointed as new ISRO Chairman

Rocket scientist S Somanath has been appointed as the new Chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and Secretary of Department of Space for a combined tenure of three years. Somanath will succeed K Sivan, who completes his extended tenure on Friday, January 14. Presently, he is serving as Director, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC).

According to an order issued on Wednesday by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Somanath to the post for a combined tenure of three years from the date of joining of the post, inclusive of an extension in tenure beyond the age of superannuation in public interest or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
