Retired Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer Rakesh Kumar Goyal is the new Chairman of the Punjab’s prestigious Real Estate Regulatory Authority (RERA). He has been appointed as the new RERA Chief eight months after a retired IAS officer, Satya Gopal (Retd.IAS:1988:AGMUT), resigned from this post.

Both these retired bureaucrats are considered to be close to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convener and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

Both Goyal and Gopal have been associated with RERA as a member as well as the chairman of the authority respectively. The government had invited applications for chairman’s post and received 16 applications out of which two candidates, both retired IRS officers, were shortlisted. Goyal was appointed the Punjab RERA chief as another shortlisted candidate, retired IRS officer Parneet Sachdeva, joined as the Haryana RERA chief.

It should be noted here that Goyal’s appointment is subject to the final outcome of the Malwinder Singh Jaggi Vs State of Punjab case. The case is being heard by the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
