The Rajasthan government on Tuesday (10.06.2025) appointed Ravi Prakash Meharda (IPS:1991:RJ) as the Acting Director General of Police (DGP) of the state. He replaces Utkal Ranjan Sahoo (IPS:1988:RJ), who has been named the new Chairman of the Rajasthan Public Service Commission (RPSC).
Meharda, a 1991-batch IPS officer currently serving as Director General of the Anti-Corruption Bureau, will hold the DGP post as an additional charge. His tenure as Acting DGP is expected to be brief, with retirement due on June 30, 2025. He is the second senior-most IPS officer in the Rajasthan cadre after Rajeev Sharma (IPS:1990:RJ).
The appointment signals that the state government may soon announce the full-time DGP, as it awaits the conclusion of the selection process.
As reported by www.legendofficers.com earlier in the day, the state government has already submitted a panel of names to the UPSC. Once the UPSC finalizes and returns the names of three shortlisted officers, the state is expected to announce the next permanent DGP.
The leading contenders in the fray are:
- Rajeev Sharma (IPS:1990:RJ), DG, Bureau of Police Research & Development (BPR&D)
- Sanjay Agarwal (IPS:1992:RJ), DG, Intelligence, Rajasthan
- Rajesh Nirwan (IPS:1992:RJ), DG, Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS)
Of the three, Rajeev Sharma is seen as having a distinct edge, owing to his seniority, unblemished record, and the confidence of both the Centre and the state government—unless the state leadership opts for a surprise pick.
This interim arrangement is expected to last only until the appointment of a regular DGP is finalized.
