Lucknow: With the retirement of Uttar Pradesh DGP Prashant Kumar (IPS:1990:UP) scheduled for May 31, the race for the state’s top police post has intensified. However, the Home Department has yet to forward a panel of names to the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), a key step in the appointment process. Nor has the state government constituted a selection committee, as required under its own rules.

Two other DG-rank officers—DG (Jails) PV Ramasastri and DG (Telecom) Sanjay M Tarade—are also due to retire by the end of May. These exits will reshape the seniority landscape among IPS officers eligible for the DGP position.

Officers with more than six months of service remaining will be considered. Based on this criterion, the seniority list includes:

  • Safi Ahsan Rizvi (IPS:1990:UP)
  • Sandeep Salunke (IPS:1990:UP)
  • Daljit Singh Chaudhary (IPS:1990:UP)
  • Renuka Mishra (IPS:1990:UP)
  • MK Bashal (IPS:1990:UP)
  • Tilottama Verma (IPS:1990:UP)
  • Alok Sharma (IPS:1991:UP)
  • Piyush Anand (IPS:1991:UP)
  • Rajiv Krishna (IPS:1991:UP)

Among these, Daljit Singh Chaudhary, Alok Sharma, and Rajiv Krishna are viewed as strong contenders. However, Chaudhary is currently serving as DG, Border Security Force (BSF), and Sharma is heading the elite Special Protection Group (SPG). Rajiv Krishna, who has four years of service left, presently serves as Chairman, UP Police Recruitment and Promotion Board, and Director, Vigilance.

Also in the fray is DG (Training) Tilottama Verma, who meets the six-month service requirement. If appointed, she would become the first woman DGP of Uttar Pradesh. Verma brings central agency experience, having served in the CBI for an extended period.
