The Central government on Wednesday (07.05.2025) extended the tenure of Central Bureau of Investigation CBI Director Praveen Sood (IPS:1986:KN) by one year beyond his scheduled term ending May 24, 2025.

The decision came after the high-powered selection committee failed to reach a consensus on Sood’s successor. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), acting on the panel’s recommendation, approved the extension.

“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, based on the recommendations of the Committee, has approved the extension in tenure of Shri Praveen Sood, IPS (KN:1986) as Director, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a period of one year beyond 24.05.2025,” the government said in a statement.

The selection committee includes the Prime Minister, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, and the Chief Justice of India. A recent meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, and Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna reportedly ended without agreement on a new appointment.

Sood, who took charge in May 2023, will now continue to head India’s premier investigating agency until May 2026.
