The Odisha government is grappling with a severe shortage of IAS, IPS and IFS officers across the state cadre. Replying to a question from BJD MLA Pratap Keshari Deb, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi informed the Assembly on Monday that 46 posts in the IAS cadre, 67 in IPS, and 70 in IFS are lying vacant. Against a sanctioned strength of 248 IAS posts, 195 IPS posts and 141 IFS posts, the state continues to face a widening personnel gap.

Majhi said these posts come under the All India Services and appointments are made by the Government of India. He added that the state is in touch with the Centre to speed up the filling of the vacancies. He also said the shortage is affecting governance and service delivery in many departments.
