Alarmed at the strain on country’s health infrastructure due to a relentless surge in covid-19 cases, the Centre is mulling idea of roping in the civil servants with medical background into the health care service.
According to the sources, the Ministry of Personnel is preparing a database of civil service officers with medical qualifications, who could be deployed in hospitals to deal with the corona crisis. The list will have those IAS, IPS other bureaucrats who at least have an MBBS degree.
With the healthcare sector straining at the resources, the Ministry of Personnel has recognized the importance of officials who have administrative as well as medical expertise.Apart from dealing with increasing demand for beds, ventilators, isolation wards, and oxygen cylinders, the sector is also saddled with the shortage of manpower.
