Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has announced that the government will throw open non-strategic public sector entities for privatization.
In strategic sectors also, at least one enterprise will remain in the public sector, but private sector will also be allowed. The number of PSEs in strategic sectors will ordinarily be only one to four. Others will either be privatised/merged, or brought under holding companies.
The finance minister emphasized upon the need for coherent policy where all sectors are open to the private sector with public sector enterprises playing a crucial role in defined areas.
