Amid the gloom of corona outbreak there is some positive news emanating from one of our public sector undertakings. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced that it has completed construction of 3979 km of highways in the financial year ending on March 31. This is the highest ever construction in a year by the NHAI.
The government has planned an ambitious highway development programme called ‘Bharatmala Pariyojana’. This plan would involve development of about 65,000 km national highways in 5 years with an outlay of Rs 5,35,000 crore. NHAI will develop nearly 27,500 km of national highways under Bharatmal Pariyojna Phase-I.
The authority said in a statement that it is ‘committed to provide a smooth ride on national highways in the country,”
