Senior IPS officer Idashisha Nongrang (IPS:1992:AM) is likely to be appointed as the acting Director General of Police (DGP) of Meghalaya after retirement of incumbent DGP Lajja Ram Bishnoi (IPS:1991:AM) on May 19, 2024.

The decision to appoint an acting DGP comes due to the ongoing model code of conduct for the Lok Sabha elections.

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) had earlier recommended three candidates for the DGP position, including Nongrang himself. The three candidates, all from the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, are Idashisha Nongrang (IPS:1992:AM), Ram Prasad Meena (IPS:1993:AM), and Deepak Kumar (IPS:1994:AM).

The state government has sent the names of the officers to Election Commission of India to approve the appointment of new DGP in Meghalaya.
