Mukul Rohatgi turns down govt offer to be next Attorney General

Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi has turned down the government's request to be the next Attorney General Of India. On Sunday he said that there is no specific reason but added that decision to decline the offer has been taken after a second thought. Earlier, he had conveyed his willingness to the government's request to be the next Attorney General of India.

Rohatgi said that there was no specific reason behind his decision.

The Centre had offered the post of AG to Rohatgi earlier this month to succeed K K Venugopal, 91, whose term will end on September 30.

The current Attorney General KK Venugopal was re-appointed as the top law officer of the country for three months on 29 June. He succeeded Rohatgi in July 2017 for three years. When his three-year tenure came to an end, Venugopal had requested to be relieved of the post, citing his age. However, the central government requested him to continue and kept extending his tenure. On his third extension, Venugopal indicated to the government that he did not want to remain in office after September 30, when the term ends.
