In a significant development, the Modi government on Friday (July 11, 2025) approved an extension of service for Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan (IAS:1989:SK) beyond his scheduled retirement on September 30, 2025. He will now continue in office until August 22, 2026.

According to an official order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has cleared his extension under the provisions of FR 56(d) and Rule 16(1A) of the All India Services (Death-cum-Retirement Benefits) Rules, 1958. The extension is valid till August 22, 2026, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

Govind Mohan was appointed as Union Home Secretary on August 14, 2024, and formally assumed charge on August 22, succeeding Ashok Bhalla (IAS:1984:AM), who had completed his five-year tenure in the role.
