The Modi government on Thursday (03.08.2023) granted a third extension to Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba (IAS:1982:JH), allowing him to serve for an additional year beyond August 30, 2023. Gauba, a former Union Home Secretary, was initially appointed to the position for two years in 2019 and had previously received one-year extensions in August of the last two years.

To formalize this extension, the Government relaxed the AIS (DCRB) Rules, 1958, and Rule 56(d) of the Fundamental Rules.

According to an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), “The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved extension in service to Shri Rajiv Gauba, lAS (JH:82) as Cabinet Secretary for a further period of one year beyond 30.08.2023, in relaxation of AIS (DCRB) Rules, 1958 and Rule 56(d) of the Fundamental Rules”.

This move solidifies Gauba’s continued role as Cabinet Secretary, providing continuity and stability in this crucial position.
