The request for central deputation of seven IPS officers from the Gujarat cadre by the Union Home Ministry has stirred considerable discussion among state officials, particularly those whose names have been put forward.

The list of IPS officers slated for central deputation includes the following individuals:

  1. V Chandrashekar (IPS: 2000: GJ), IG, Surat Range.
  2. Achal Tyagi (IPS: 2015: GJ), Superintendent of Police (SP), Mehsana.
  3. Praveen Meena (IPS: 2016: GJ), SP, Anand.
  4. Amit Vasava (IPS: 2016: GJ), SP, Ahmedabad Rural.
  5. Ajit Rajian (IPS: 2015: GJ), DCP, Ahmedabad Cyber Cell
  6. Sunil Joshi (IPS: 2010: GJ), SP, ATS.
  7. Shweta Shrimali (IPS: 2010: GJ), SP Ahmedabad Central Jail.

It’s worth noting that this marks the second central deputation for IGP V Chandrashekar, who previously served as Deputy Inspector General (DIG) with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Sunil Joshi and Shweta Shrimali, an IPS couple, have opted for central deputation with the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Sunil Joshi was offered the NIA option after expressing a preference not to be assigned to the CBI. The Union Home Ministry has requested CBI deputation for the remaining five IPS officers.

A total of 13 IPS officers from various states were shortlisted for central deputation. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has already contacted other states to release the six IPS officers, and a similar communication regarding the seven IPS officers from the Gujarat cadre is expected shortly. Currently, more than ten Gujarat cadre IPS officers are serving in various central agencies.

Recent examples of IPS officers being sent on central deputation include IGP Piyush Patel (IPS:1998:AGMUT), who was assigned to the Border Security Force (BSF) Headquarters in Delhi, and IPS Deepak Damor (IPS:2001:GJ) who was on central deputation as the Inspector General of BSF Gujarat Frontier before being transferred to the CBI.
