The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Tuesday (05.11.2024) appointed senior IPS officer Sanjay Kumar Verma (IPS:1990:MH) as the new Director General of Police (DGP) of Maharashtra. He succeeds Rashmi Shukla (IPS:1988:MH), who was removed on Monday following the complaints from the Opposition parties. Prior to this appointment, Verma was serving as the Director General of Police (Legal and Technical wing).
In a letter to the state Chief Secretary, ECI Secretary S.K. Das stated, “I am directed to convey that the Commission has considered the panel and approved the name of Shri Sanjay Kumar Verma, IPS (MH:1990) for posting as DGP Maharashtra.”
Verma, who topped the list of candidates for the top post, is set to retire in April 2028.
After removal of Rashmi Shukla, Mumbai Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar (IPS:1989:MH) had temporarily took charge of the post.
