The Modi government on Monday (18.11.2024) appointed senior IAS officer K Sanjay Murthy (IAS:1989:HP) as the new Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India. Murthy will succeed Girish Chandra Murmu (Retd. IAS:1985:GJ), who is set to retire on November 21.
The order said, ” By virtue of the power vested in her by clause (1) of article 148 of the Constitution of India, the President has been pleased to appoint Shri K. Sanjay Murthy to be the Comptroller and Auditor General of India with effect from the date he assumes charges of his office.”
Presently, Murthy is Secretary, Department of Higher Education under the Ministry of Education and is scheduled to retire on 31.12.2024. His appointment as CAG, just a month before his retirement, has come as a surprise to many.
Murthy comes with extensive administrative experience having previously served as Information & Broadcasting Secretary and as MD of the National Industrial Corridor Development Corporation in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, where he played key role in implementing government’s plan to build new towns and cities. Additionally, he has also served as Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
Murmu, who was appointed as CAG in August 2020 after serving as the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu & Kashmir, will step down as he reaches the age limit of 65 years on November 21.
