The Central government on Monday (16.10.2023) notified the appointment of Justice Siddharth Mridul, a Delhi High Court judge, as the Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court.

In July of this year, the Supreme Court Collegium had recommended Justice Mridul’s appointment as the Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court. However, the appointment was pending with the Central government for over three months. Last week, the Centre confirmed that Justice Mridul’s appointment had been approved and would be formally notified soon.

The Manipur High Court had been without a permanent Chief Justice since February, with Justice Muralidharan serving as the acting Chief Justice. Despite Justice Muralidharan’s request to either transfer him to the Madras High Court, his parent court, or allow him to continue in Manipur, the Collegium decided to transfer him to the Calcutta High Court for the “better administration of justice” on October 9.
