India has made history by securing its third consecutive term as President of the Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD) General Conference (GC). This remarkable achievement comes after India had already served as President from 2018 to 2021 and 2021 to 2023. The Secretary of the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting hailed this accomplishment as unprecedented in the 50-year history of AIBD, underscoring the confidence that broadcasting organizations in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond have in India’s leadership and its ability to pave the way for a new era in broadcasting.
AIBD, established in 1977 under the auspices of UNESCO, is a unique regional inter-governmental organization with 92 member organizations spanning 44 countries. These include 26 Government Members represented by 48 broadcasting authorities and broadcasters, as well as 44 Affiliates represented by 28 countries and regions across Asia, the Pacific, Europe, Africa, the Arab States, and North America. India, as a founding member, plays a significant role, with Prasar Bharati, India’s public service broadcaster, serving as the representative body of the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Government of India, at AIBD.
The 21st General Conference & Associated Meetings 2023 (GC 2023) of AIBD, chaired by Gaurav Dwivedi, CEO Prasar Bharati, concluded successfully from October 2 to 4, 2023, in Port Louis, Mauritius. The primary mandate of this two-day conference is to foster a dynamic and unified electronic media environment in the Asia-Pacific region through policy development and resource allocation.
This prestigious leadership position at an international broadcasting institute not only signifies the global media’s strong confidence in India and Prasar Bharati but also lays the groundwork for India to achieve further strategic milestones in the field of broadcasting.
