The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is looking for a new Director, as the tenure of current Director Subodh Kumar Jaiswal (IPS:1985:MH) will end on May 25. The high-powered selection committee comprising the Prime Minister, the Chief Justice Of India, and the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha met on Saturday evening and shortlisted three senior IPS officers for the post of CBI Director.

The names of the officers are;

  1. Praveen Sood (IPS:1986:KN), presently serving as DGP of Karnataka
  2. Sudhir Saxena (IPS:1987:MP), presently serving as DGP of Madhya Pradesh
  3. Taj Hassan Mohammad (IPS:1987:AGMUT), presently serving as DG, Fire Services, Civil Defence and Home Guards.

These three names have now been forwarded to the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, which will select one for the top post. Anyone can be considered for the top post. However, it seems Sood is the frontrunner for the post, who appears to have the backing of the Prime Minister and the CJI. However, the Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, submitted a detailed dissent note opposing Sood’s candidature because he was not part of the pool of IPS officers eligible to serve at the DGP level at the Centre.

The CBI Director has a fixed tenure of two years and that can be extended up to five years.
