Gyanesh Kumar IAS Biography: Gyanesh Kumar, a 1988-batch IAS officer of the Kerala cadre, has had a distinguished career spanning more than three decades in the state and Central governments before taking charge as the 26th Chief Election Commissioner of India in February 2025.
An alumnus of IIT Kanpur, where he completed B.Tech in Civil Engineering, Kumar held several important assignments in the Kerala government and later served in key positions at the Centre, including in the Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs and Ministry of Cooperation.
His Central deputation included responsibilities relating to Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh and the Ayodhya matter, while as Cooperation Secretary he played a key role in the newly created ministry.
He was appointed Election Commissioner in March 2024 and subsequently became Chief Election Commissioner in February 2025.
Early life, Edu. and family
Gyanesh Kumar was born on January 27, 1964. Birth Place- Agra, Uttar Pradesh. Gyanesh Kumar’s father, Dr. Subodh Gupta, served in the Uttar Pradesh health department at various places, including as Chief Medical Officer in Varanasi. He later retired as Chief Medical Superintendent from Etah and settled in Agra.
His mother, Satyawati Gupta, is associated with yoga and spiritual activities.
Gyanesh Kumar studied at Colvin Taluqdars’ College, Lucknow for both his High School (Class 10) and Intermediate (Class 12).

He joined IIT Kanpur and completed a B.Tech in Civil Engineering in 1985. After IIT, he worked for about a year with HUDCO in Delhi before clearing the Civil Services Examination and joining the IAS in 1988.

Election Commission
Kumar superannuated from the IAS on January 31, 2024. He was subsequently appointed Election Commissioner and assumed charge on March 15, 2024.
He was part of the Election Commission during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. He was appointed Chief Election Commissioner of India in February 2025 and took charge as the 26th CEC on February 19, 2025.
His tenure as CEC is scheduled to run until January 26, 2029, subject to the statutory tenure provisions.
