Agartala: The Tripura government on Monday (July 20, 2026) entrusted senior IPS officer GS Rao (IPS:1999:TR) with the additional charge of Director General of Police (DGP) following the sudden demise of Anurag Dhankar (IPS:1994:TR).
According to an order issued by the General Administration (Personnel & Training) Department, Rao, who is currently serving as Additional Director General of Police, Armed Police, Tripura, will hold the additional charge of DGP (Head of Police Force), Tripura, until further orders.
The order stated that the decision was taken consequent upon the death of Anurag Dhankar, who was serving as DGP (Head of Police Force), Tripura.
The development came hours after Dhankar passed away while on duty. The Tripura Cabinet expressed deep sorrow over his untimely demise and announced one-day State mourning on Tuesday (July 21, 2026) as a mark of respect to the senior police officer.
