In a major move, the Government of India has terminated Dr. Krishnamurthy Subramanian’s tenure as Executive Director (India) at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) with immediate effect.

According to an order issued by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) dated April 30, the decision has been approved without citing any specific reason for the abrupt removal.

Subramanian, who took charge as India’s representative at the IMF on November 1, 2022, was nominated to the post in August 2022. His termination comes ahead of the IMF Executive Board meeting scheduled for May 9, where funding to Pakistan is set to be reviewed. India is expected to oppose any further financial support to Pakistan, citing ongoing concerns around terror financing.

Before his IMF appointment, Subramanian served as the Chief Economic Adviser to the Government of India from 2018 to 2021. The IMF’s Executive Board, composed of 24 members, is responsible for overseeing the Fund’s daily operations and major policy decisions.
