In an amendment to the Indian Police Service (Probation) Rules, the central government on Monday allowed IPS probationers to take their foundational training at an institute other than the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA) in Mussoorie.

Prior to the latest amendment, the IPS (Probation) Rules, 1954, required officers selected through the annual Civil Services Examination to complete a three-month foundational course at LBSNAA, followed by further training at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA), Hyderabad. Due to the fact that some IPS appointees opted to skip the foundational course in their first year of service-usually to take another attempt-they were sent to institutions other than LBSNAA to complete it later.

By amending the IPS (Probation) Amendment Rules 2023, the government seeks to formalise this arrangement in order to insulate itself from any possible legal challenges, particularly when it comes to IPS probationers being marked by institutes other than LBSNAA.

Under the amended rules, LBSNAA in consultation with the central government may designate any other institute to offer the foundational course to IPS probationers before moving to SVPNPA.
