Former Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer Kannan Gopinathan (IAS:2012:AGMUT), has refused to follow the government directive asking him to re-join his duties in the wake of COVID-19 outbreak.
Kannan had resigned from the service eight months ago, citing “growing intolerance and curtailment of freedom of speech”. However, his resignation is yet to be accepted by the government.
Gopinath said he is ready to serve the government and society in any other capacity, but not anymore as an IAS officer. Gopinath is now working with some NGO in Maharashtra. He said, “I don’t need the IAS tag to do some work. I am happy with my present freedom,”
Gopinath hails from Eramalloor in Alappuzha district. As a union territory cadre IAS officer, he was posted in Dadra and Nagar Haveli when he quit the service.
