Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the appointment of Sanjay Kumar Mishra (Retd IRS-IT: 1984), former Enforcement Directorate (ED) Chief, as a Full-Time Member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM) in the rank of Secretary. The appointment was announced on Tuesday, March 25, 2025.

The EAC-PM is an independent body that provides economic and policy advice to the Government of India, specifically to the Prime Minister.

Mishra’s selection for this key position is unsurprising, given his close ties with the central government leadership during his tenure as ED Chief. However, the timing of the appointment has surprised many, as the government maintained strict confidentiality, avoiding any leaks before the official announcement.

As ED Chief, Mishra enjoyed significant trust from the central government. He was one of the rare bureaucrats—alongside former Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, Nripendra Misra—to have his term extended through an Ordinance.

Mishra stepped down as ED Chief on September 15, 2023, following a Supreme Court ruling in July 2023 that permitted his extension until that date in the national interest.

He was initially appointed as interim Director of the ED for three months in October 2018, before being made the full-time chief in November 2018 for a two-year fixed tenure.
