The Modi government on Monday extended the tenure of Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri (IFS:1989) until 14 July, 2026. He was scheduled to retire on November 30.
According to an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), “The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved extension in service of Shri Vikram Misri, IFS (1989) as Foreign Secretary beyond the date of his superannuation i.e. 30.11.2024 for a tenure up to 14.07.2026 or until further orders, whichever is earlier.”
Misri assumed the charge of the post on July 15, following the retirement of the incumbent Vinay Kwatra (IFS:1988) on July 14, 2024. Misri was serving as Deputy National Security Advisor (Dy.NSA) when he was appointed Foreign Secretary.
He holds the rare distinction of having served as the private secretary to three former prime ministers: Indra Kumar Gujral in 1997, Manmohan Singh in 2012, and Narendra Modi in 2014.
