Retired IPS officer and former SIB chief T Prabhakar Rao (Retd. IPS:2001:TG) is reported to have sought political asylum in the US. He is the prime accused in the sensational phone-tapping case registered on March 10 in the Panjagutta police station of Telangana. He reportedly left India on March 11, the very next day.
According to a report quoting well-placed sources, Prabhakar Rao has requested the US government to recognise him as a “political refugee”. However, there is no official confirmation from the police department about it.
Sources said that the retired IPS officer has claimed in his petition that he has worked in key roles in the government, yet he is being harassed. Rao is currently staying with his son in Florida and is said to be undergoing treatment for cancer.
The Telangana police has been trying to bring him back from Florida through a Red Corner notice from INTERPOL.
