The Election Commission of India (ECI) has shot off a letter to the Maharashtra Chief Secretary (CS) asking for an explanation for the non-compliance of its orders regarding transfer and posting of police and revenue officers. The state is headed for assembly elections shortly, and keeping it in view the EC had asked the state administration to carry out transfers.
The explanation has been sought from the CS and Director General of Police (DGP) for failing to fully implement its orders on the transfer of officials ahead of the upcoming assembly elections.
There are more than 100 inspector-level police officers and many revenue officers holding key positions in Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra who were to be transferred as per the EC’s directive.
The EC had issued a directive on July 31 to relocate officials who have served in their home district or current posting for over three years. The compliance report was to be submitted by August 20 itself. While other states, going to the polls, responded with required report, Maharashtra failed to act despite repeated reminders by the EC. It led the EC to express strong displeasure at the delay and seek explanation for the failure to comply with its order.
State Chief Secretary Sujata Saunik has, however, said that the report will be submitted by Monday.
