The AAP-led Delhi government on Thursday sought the central government’s approval to appoint PK Gupta (IAS:1989:AGMUT) as the new Chief Secretary of Delhi. Gupta is currently serving as Additional Chief Secretary, General Administration Department. The incumbent Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar (IAS:1989:AGMUT) is set to retire later this year.

According to sources, Naresh Kumar himself wants a transfer from the Delhi govt and has made his desire known to his seniors as well.
Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal sent the proposal regarding Gupta’s appointment to LG VK Saxena for central government approval. The Delhi government was given executive power in services matters, including transfer and posting of officers, in a significant verdict by the Supreme Court on May 11.

The Supreme Court ruled that the elected government in Delhi will now hold legislative and executive powers over services department matters, barring those related to land, police, and public order, that still come under the jurisdiction of the lieutenant governor.
