A considerable amount of posts for IAS and IPS officers are lying vacant in the country. Union Minister for Personnel Jitendra Singh made this revealing disclosure on Thursday saying that a total of 1,316 posts of Administrative Service (IAS) officers and 586 posts of Indian Police Service (IPS) officers are presently lying vacant in the country. He made this disclosure through a written reply in the Rajya Sabha. The vacancies included both, the direct recruits as well as promotion posts.
As on January 1, 2024, out of the country’s total sanctioned strength of 6,858 IAS officers, only 5,542 officers were serving. Out of the 1,316 vacant posts of IAS officers, 794 were meant for direct recruits and 522 were promotion posts.
Similarly, only 4,469 IPS officers were in service against their sanctioned strength of 5,055. For IPS, of the 586 vacant IPS posts, 209 were for direct recruits and 377 were promotion posts.
Apart from it, there are 2,151 Indian Forest Service (IFS) officers in-position presently against their sanctioned strength of 3,193. Of the 1,042 vacant IFS posts, 503 were for direct recruits and 539 promotion posts.
This is happening despite the fact that officers belonging to these categories are annually recruited by the Union Public Service Commission with unfailing consistency.
