The central government has restructured the Chandigarh Police administration by formally sanctioning the post of Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) as the top leadership position, replacing the previous practice of appointing Director General of Police (DGP) without a sanctioned designation.
The Ministry of Personnel formalized this decision through a notification, clarifying that the police force will now be officially headed by an ADGP. While ADGP-ranked officers were previously posted as DGPs in Chandigarh, the newly sanctioned ADGP post establishes the head of the force with formal recognition.
Chandigarh Police, established in 1966, originally had its leadership at the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) level. The Inspector General of Police (IGP) post was introduced in 1981 and retained until 2017, when Tajender Singh Luthra was promoted as the city’s first DGP. The practice of appointing DGPs based on promotions has now ended.
Currently, ADGP-level officer Surendra Singh Yadav (IPS:1997:AGMUT) leads the Chandigarh Police, aligning with the newly formalized hierarchy. His leadership is expected to continue without changes. The notification also sanctions a Deputy Inspector General (DIG) post, filling a long-standing vacancy.
The restructured hierarchy positions the ADGP below the DGP but above the IGP in the police framework.
This restructuring aligns with broader reforms by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), which recently replaced the UT Administrator’s Adviser post with that of Chief Secretary.
The restructured Chandigarh Police now includes seven sanctioned IPS posts: ADGP, IGP, DIG, and four SPs responsible for security, city operations, crime intelligence, and headquarters. The senior-most SP continues to hold additional SSP responsibilities.
