Chairman Nitin Gupta’s CBDT tenure extended until June 2024

Nitin Gupta (IRS-IT:1986) will continue to serve as the Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) until June 30, 2024, as per an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) on Saturday, dated September 30, 2023. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved Mr. Gupta’s re-appointment on a contractual basis, effective from October 1, 2023, until June 30, 2024, or until further notice.

This nine-month extension for Mr. Gupta coincided with the day he was scheduled to retire from the service.

Mr. Gupta, who is currently 60 years old, assumed the role of CBDT Chairman in June 2022.

During Mr. Gupta’s tenure as Chairman, the CBDT achieved remarkable success in tax collection. In the fiscal year 2022-2023, the CBDT recorded a significant increase in net direct tax collection, reaching ₹16.61 lakh crore. This marked a substantial growth of 17.63 percent when compared to the previous fiscal year’s collection of Rs. 14.12 lakh crore.
