Centre forms committee to review television ratings system

In the wake of the alleged TRP scam the Central Government has constituted a high level committee headed by Prasar Bharti CEO Shashi S. Vempati, to review the guidelines on TRP rating agencies in the country. The panel will submit its report to the Information and Broadcasting minister within two months.

The present guidelines, which are in operation for last few years, were prepared by a Parliamentary Committee on Television Rating Points (TRP) constituted by the ministry and recommendations of the Telecom Regulatory Authority etc.

Our sources in the ministry say that with the rapid changing TV industry, a fresh look is required for a credible and transparent rating system.

The committee will carry out an appraisal of the existing system, examine TRAI recommendations notified from time to time, overall industry scenario and address the needs of the stakeholders.

The high level committee, apart from Prasar Bharati CEO Vempati, comprises of Dr Shalabh, Professor of Statistics, Department of Mathematics and Statistics, IIT Kanpur ; Dr Rajkumar Upadhyay, Executive Director, C-DOT ; and professor Pulak Ghosh, Decision Sciences Centre for Public Policy (CPP).
