Incumbent CBI Director Praveen Sood (IAS:1986:KN) is likely to receive a one-year extension, as the high-powered selection committee headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi failed to arrive at a consensus on his successor, according to reports. An official notification regarding the extension is expected to be issued shortly.

The committee, which includes Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, met on the evening of May 5, 2025, at the Prime Minister’s Office. Reports said the meeting remained inconclusive, with panel members unable to agree on a candidate for the top post. The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) had submitted a long list of eligible IPS officers for consideration.

As per existing provisions, the CBI Director may be granted an extension of up to one year. Sood is set to complete his two-year tenure on May 25. Prior to his appointment as CBI Director in 2023, he served as the Director General of Police, Karnataka, and succeeded Subodh Kumar Jaiswal (IPS:1985:MH).
