The CBDT has initiated an inquiry against a group of 50 IRS officers of the Income Tax department, who authored an unsolicited report on mobilising additional revenues to fund the fight against coronavirus. They submitted their report to the PMO and the Finance Ministry, and then made it public without authorisation.

The CBDT in a statement said that neither had it asked these officers to prepare any such report, nor they sought its permission for making the report public.

The CBDT said that the action of these officers is a “violation of extant Conduct Rules. Necessary inquiry is being initiated in this matter”.

According to sources, the Finance Ministry also viewed the report as “ill-conceived” and termed the conduct of these officers as an act of indiscipline and violation of service conduct rules.
