The central government on Saturday (June 28, 2025) extended the tenure of Ravi Agrawal (IRS-IT:1988) as Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) by one year.

According to an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved Agrawal’s re-appointment on a contract basis for a period of one year—from July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2026, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

The extension has been granted in relaxation of recruitment rules, and will be subject to the usual terms and conditions for re-employed officers of the central government.

Agrawal succeeded Nitin Gupta (IRS-IT:1986) as CBDT Chairman after Gupta’s extended tenure ended on June 30, 2024. Before taking over as Chairman, Agrawal served as Member (Administration) and Director General (Investigation) in Delhi.

The CBDT is the apex authority responsible for the formulation and implementation of direct tax policy in India and functions under the Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance.
