Cabinet Secretary T V Somanathan (IAS:1987:TN) has instructed all ministries and departments to submit detailed department-specific monthly progress reports of activities for better evaluation. These reports have to be submitted by 10th of every month. Till now ministries used to send generic reports containing details of achievements and progress.
According to an official, it is not going to be a routine affair of sending a letter mentioning details. The details being sought now are exhaustive and more specific. Some departments have been asked to mention the progress made on major policy proposals as well.

This task is going to prove more critical for infrastructure ministries and departments such as road, railway, power, telecom and urban affairs. For example, the road transport ministry has to provide the details of construction, award of NH (in km) and cost escalation of projects in the current month, previous month and current month of previous year. This is not all; it also has to provide the number of black spots (accident prone spots) rectified capital expenditure, average speed, number of fatalities per km and average time taken to address complaints regarding NHs.
Further, the departments have to also provide details of the number of MSME (micro, small and medium enterprises) vendors who have not received payment from public enterprises in 45 days, also mentioning the amount of pending payments. An official said that its aim is to ensure faster release of payments to the MSME vendors for efficient disposal of works.
