Bombay High Court judge, Justice Rohit Deo, has sent shockwaves through the judiciary and the legal community. In a surprising turn of events on Friday, he announced his immediate resignation from his position in open court, citing ‘personal reasons’ for his decision.
Rohit Deo, a former Advocate-General of Maharashtra, startled those present in his courtroom during regular hearings by declaring that he had submitted his resignation. This unprecedented move, of a High Court judge making his resignation public in an open court, has left lawyers and litigants in astonishment.
Despite having more than two years remaining in his tenure, Deo was slated to retire on December 4, 2025. His resignation follows another recent departure from the judiciary, that of Justice Pushpa Ganediwala, who resigned on February 11, 2022.
