Punjab: Former IPS officer Jatinder Singh Aulakh appointed Chairman of PPSC

The Punjab government on Wednesday announced the appointment of Jatinder Singh Aulakh (IPS:1997:PB), a retired IPS officer and former state intelligence chief, as the Chairman of the Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC). This decision received approval from Punjab Governor Banwarilal Purohit.

The recommendation for Aulakh’s appointment as the PPSC Chairman was put forth by the Punjab government on the same day, and Governor Purohit cleared the file in the evening.

Jatinder Singh Aulakh, who retired as the Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) on January 31 of the previous year, culminating 33 years of dedicated service, has been entrusted with the responsibility of leading the PPSC. The commission had been functioning without a regular chairman since March of the preceding year, adversely impacting the appointment processes. The PPSC is responsible for recruiting class I officers for various departments in the state.

The previous regular chairperson, Jagbans Singh Powar, retired in March of the same year, leading to the appointment of Jamit Kaur Teji as the officiating chairperson. However, Teji also retired on September 29.

Interestingly, Aulakh will now be heading the same commission that had selected him as a DSP in 1990. His extensive experience includes serving in various crucial roles within the Punjab Police, and following the establishment of the Bhagwant Mann government in March 2022, he served as the Intelligence Chief and Inspector General. Aulakh received a promotion to ADGP on the final day of his service on January 31, 2023.
