Speculations continue over Rajiv Gauba’s next assignment post Cabinet Secretary tenure

Former Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba (Retd. IAS:1982:JH) remains a subject of intense speculation in Delhi’s power corridors. Following the completion of his extended tenure on August 30, 2024, there is considerable interest in his next assignment.

A trusted bureaucrat of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Gauba’s name frequently surfaces in discussions among political and bureaucratic circles. The latest buzz suggests that he may soon take on a significant role, possibly within the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). However, as speculation often lacks a concrete basis, an official announcement will provide clarity.

After the formation of the BJP government in Delhi, Gauba was also rumored to be a contender for the Lieutenant Governor (LG) post. Many believed his vast administrative experience could support the government in fulfilling public expectations.

Further, with a cabinet reshuffle anticipated around June or July, speculation is rife that Gauba could be inducted into the Union Cabinet. Alternatively, insiders suggest that if he is not assigned a ministerial role, he could be appointed as a governor.

That said, predicting decisions of the Modi government has often proved challenging. Past experiences have shown that even well-placed sources can be taken by surprise by the government’s unexpected moves.
