Avtar Singh Shahi has been posted as Inspector General (IG) of the Border Security Force’s Frontier Headquarters in Delhi, the Ministry of Home Affairs announced this week.

A career BSF officer, Shahi joined the force as an Assistant Commandant and has risen through the ranks over more than three decades of service. He was serving as IG (Frontier Headquarters — Special Ops) in Odisha before the Delhi posting.

Shahi is a highly decorated officer. He was awarded the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service in August 2025 — one of the highest honours for long and exceptional service in policing — having earlier received the President’s Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2018. The Ministry of Home Affairs’ list of medal awardees includes his name.

During his field career, Shahi has served across sensitive theatres of operations — from Kashmir to the southern tip of India — and has led counter-infiltration and counter-terrorism operations while commanding units in border and internal-security roles. He is regarded within the force as an operationally strong leader who keeps a tight focus on discipline and troop morale.

The Delhi Frontier Headquarters is a key formation within the BSF’s organisational structure, responsible for oversight of front-line deployments, operational coordination and administrative decisions in its area of responsibility. As IG (Ftr HQ), Shahi will play a central role in both policy implementation and operational readiness for units under his command.

Officials say the posting underlines the Centre’s trust in Shahi’s operational experience and leadership at a time when internal and border security demands robust coordination. He is expected to assume charge of his new responsibilities in the coming days.
