Senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Anurag Agarwal (IPS:1998:AM) has been appointed as the Joint Secretary (Security) of the Lok Sabha Secretariat. Prior to this role, he served as the Inspector General (IG) of the Central Reserve Police Force’s (CRPF) North East Sector based in Shillong.

The order issued by the Lok Sabha Secretariat on February 29 stated, “The Speaker is pleased to appoint Anurag Agarwal, IPS(AM:98), presently working as IG, CRPF, to the post of Joint Secretary (Security) on deputation basis for a period of three (03) years from the date of assumption of charge, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.”

The vacancy in the position arose after Raghubir Lal (IPS:1997:UP), the previous officer in the role, shifted out on November 2 to take up his next assignment in parent cadre Uttar Pradesh as ADGP, Security. The post remained vacant during a security breach on December 13. Subsequently, the Lok Sabha Secretariat requested the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to provide names of potential candidates to fill the vacancy promptly.

In his capacity as Joint Secretary (Security), Agarwal will lead the Parliament Security Service (PSS), an internal security service responsible for securing the Parliament. The PSS is supported by two Directors (Security) from both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, typically DIG rank officers on deputation from paramilitary forces. The head of the PSS oversees all paramilitary forces and Delhi Police personnel within the Parliament premises.
