Andhra Pradesh HC reserves order on anticipatory bail plea of IPS officer M Sunil Kumar Naik

Sunil Kumar Nayak, IPS

The Andhra Pradesh High Court on Monday (March 23, 2026) reserved its order on the anticipatory bail plea of Bihar cadre IPS officer M Sunil Kumar Naik (IPS:2005:BH). The next hearing is on April 6.

Justice Venkata Jyotirmayi heard both sides in detail. The court asked Naik to cooperate with the investigation. He has been told to appear before the investigating officer when required. The court also asked him to share his mobile and WhatsApp details with the authorities.

The court gave him interim protection. It said no coercive action should be taken against him for now.

At the same time, the court rejected his request for exemption from personal appearance. His plea to attend the hearing through virtual mode was also denied. The court said such relief cannot be given to an accused person.

The case is based on a complaint filed in July 2024 by former MP and Andhra Pradesh Deputy Speaker Raghuramakrishna Raju. He has alleged custodial torture by CID officials when Naik was serving as DIG.

Senior advocates Kapil Sibal and Ashwani Kumar appeared for Naik. They said proper procedure was not followed during his arrest. They said no warrant was issued and local police were not informed.

The High Court is expected to give its order on the next date of hearing.
