Senior diplomat Ajit Vinayak Gupte (IFS:1991) was on Monday (07.10.2024) appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the Federal Republic of Germany. Presently, he is serving as Ambassador of India to Egypt and is expected to take up the assignment shortly.
In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said,”Shri Ajit Vinayak Gupte (IFS: 1991), presently Ambassador of India to Egypt, has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the Federal Republic of Germany.”
“He is expected to take up the assignment shortly,” the statement added.
Before being appointed as Envoy to Egypt, he was Ambassador of India to the Kingdom of Denmark, where he served from November 2017 to March 2021.
Looking at Mr. Gupte’s career, he has handled China in various capacities, including as Under Secretary (China) from 1995 to 1998, and during his postings in Hong Kong from 1998 to 2000, and Beijing from 2000 to 2004. He also gained extensive experience in India’s neighborhood, serving in Dhaka, Bangladesh, from 2004 to 2008 as First Secretary/Counsellor.
Gupte also served in the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) as Deputy Director General from 2008 to 2010. Following that, he was Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of India in Berlin from 2010 to 2014, during which time he also served as Chargé d’Affaires for 9 months. He held the post of Joint Secretary (Haj) for a year and later served as Joint Secretary (Development Partnership Administration), handling Lines of Credit for all countries, including India’s neighbors and Africa, from 2015 to 2017.
