Bihar’s Director General of Police (DGP) Vinay Kumar (IPS:1991:BH) is soon going to have a new job profile as he is set to be appointed as the new Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) of the state.
According to reliable sources, his name for the post was agreed upon in the selection committee held on Friday. The meeting was attended by Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary, Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav and Deputy CM Vijay Sinha. Besides, it has also sbeen reported that former senior IAS officer Anjani Kumar Singh is also going to be appointed as the Information Commissioner. However, the formal appointment is yet to be made.
IPS officer Vinay Kumar, who has been commanding the Bihar Police since December 2024, proceeded on leave on September 15 and is supposed to resume his duty on October 6. In his absence, senior IPS officer Preeta Verma (IPS:1991:BH) is serving as an acting DGP.
In the meantime, the process of selecting a new DGP of the state is also underway.
Vinay Kumar, an IIT Kharagpur alumnus, rose to become the police chief of the state from Rampuri village in Mahua area of Vaishali district of Bihar.
After becoming an IPS officer Kumar served as Superintendent of Police (SP) in many districts of Bihar. From Chatra and Godda in united Bihar, he was also SP in Gopalganj, Katihar, Munger, Motihari, Bettiah and Begusarai.
He took charge of Munger after its SP was killed in the Naxal attack.
His stint as Munger SP is considered particularly significant as he was given the police command after the killing of then SP Surendra Babu in a Naxalite attack and when elections were also close. In such a challenging environment, he played a key role in conducting the elections peacefully.
Vinay Kumar took over as DGP on December 13, 2024, replacing Alok Raj and is scheduled to retire in December this year.
If appointed as CIC, his responsibility will be absolutely different in nature as the State Information Commission hears cases related to the Right to Information.
The news of the agreement on Vinay Kumar’s name has come to light at a time when the process of selecting a new DGP is also underway.
