Hyderabad: The Telangana government has sought the Centre’s approval to increase its sanctioned Indian Police Service (IPS) cadre strength from 151 to 194 posts, citing the growing administrative requirements of the state and the need to strengthen law and order.
The proposal is based on a Mid Cadre Review prepared by the Telangana Police Department and submitted to the state government on November 10, 2025. The state government forwarded the proposal to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on April 25, 2026, where it is currently pending for approval.
According to the proposal, the enhanced cadre strength is required to meet the increasing demand for senior police leadership and address future administrative challenges. If approved by the Centre, the move is expected to ease the shortage of senior IPS officers across the state.
Notably, Telangana had 112 sanctioned IPS posts when the state was formed in 2014. The cadre strength was increased to 139 in 2016. In 2025, the Centre approved a further increase from 139 to 151 posts, marking the first cadre revision since 2016. The latest proposal now seeks to raise the sanctioned strength to 194 posts.
