Amit Kumar appointed OSD in SPG, to succeed Alok Sharma as Director

Amit Kumar has been appointed OSD in the SPG and will take over as Director after Alok Sharma's tenure ends on March 31, 2027.

Senior IPS Officer Amit Kumar (IPS:1994:BH), currently serving as Special Director General in the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), has been appointed as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in the Special Protection Group (SPG). He will take over as Director, SPG after incumbent Alok Sharma (IPS:1991:UP) completes his extended tenure on March 31, 2027.

According to an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) on Tuesday (June 30, 2026), the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved Amit Kumar’s appointment as OSD in the SPG with effect from the date he assumes charge of the post, or until further orders, whichever is earlier. For this purpose, one vacant post in the SPG has been temporarily upgraded to Level-16.

Alok Sharma was due to retire on June 30, 2026. However, the ACC, on June 24, approved a nine-month extension in his tenure till March 31, 2027. He has been serving as Director, SPG since November 2023.

Following the completion of Alok Sharma’s extended tenure, Amit Kumar will assume charge as Director of the Special Protection Group, which is responsible for providing proximate security to the Prime Minister and other designated protectees.
