The Home Ministry has announced the category-wise and cadre-wise distribution of vacancies in the Indian Police Service (IPS) to be filled through Civil Services Examination 2024. But what has emerged as the biggest talking point is not the ministry’s release, but the sharp fall in the number of vacancies.
According to the release, only 147 IPS vacancies have been notified this year against 200 posts notified last year. It means civil services aspirants now will be competing for 53 fewer positions, making the race for the police service significantly tougher.
While the latest notification is one step before final cadre allocation, it gives candidates a clearer picture of the opportunities available.
As per the latest notification, 147 vacancies are spread across 25 cadres, out of which 74 are unreserved vacancies, 41 are reserved for Other Backward Classes, 22 for Scheduled Castes, and 10 for Scheduled Tribes.
West Bengal has the highest number of vacancies at 15, followed by Andhra Pradesh with 14 and Uttar Pradesh with 12. Assam-Meghalaya and Madhya Pradesh have 11 vacancies each, while Maharashtra has 10.
Interestingly, there are some cadres that have no vacancies at all, like Chhattisgarh and Himachal Pradesh, which have been allotted zero vacancies in this cycle.
The release comes after concerns were voiced over delays in cadre allocation and service allocation timelines.
