V Narayanan to succeed S Somanath as ISRO Chief on January 14

In a significant development, the central government on Tuesday (07.01.2025) appointed V Narayanan as the new Chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and Secretary of Department of Space for two years. Narayanan will assume office on January 14, succeeding S Somanath, whose term concludes on the same day.

Distinguished Scientist at Isro Narayana is currently serving as Director, Liquid Propulsion System Centre at ISRO. He is additionally serving as the Chairman of LPSC-IPRC Co-ordination Committee and Chairman of Programme Management Council – Space Transportation Systems.

According to an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) on Tuesday, ” The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Shri V Narayanan, Director, Liquid Propulsion System Centre, Valiamala as Secretary, Department of Space and Chairman, Space Commission for a period of two years with effect from 14.01.2025, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.”

With a career spanning nearly four decades, he has held various key positions within the Indian space organisation. Dr Narayanan’s expertise lies in rocket and spacecraft propulsion.
