The central government on Saturday (05.10.2024) appointed Punjab cadre IAS officer Amit Kumar (IAS:2008:PB) as the Commissioner of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation for three years.

According to order issued by DoPT, “The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the proposal of the Ministry of Home Affairs for the appointment of Amit Kumar, IAS (PB-2008) to the post of the Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, UT of Chandigarh on Inter-Cadre deputation from Punjab Cadre to AGMUT Cadre, for a period of three years or until further orders, whichever is earlier.”

Kumar is currently serving as Director, Rural Development and Panchayat Department in Punjab.

The post of the Chandigarh MC Commissioner was lying vacant since the term of previous Commissioner Anindita Mitra (IAS:1007:PB) ended on August 22. Subsequently, Chandigarh Deputy Commissioner Vinay Pratap Singh (IAS:2011:HY) was given additional charge of Chandigarh MC Commissioner.

The UT Administration had sent a panel of three Punjab cadre IAS officers to the MHA for the post of Commissioner, Chandigarh Municipal Corporation. They shortlisted officers were; Amit Kumar (IAS:2008:PB), Rambir (IAS:2009:PB) and Girish Dayalan (IAS:2011:PB).
